Is Tijuana Safe?

“The Busiest Land Border In The World

Mexico crossing

This year the Mexican government released some significant statistics showing a 40 percent decrease in the number of crimes in TJ (Tijuana), from 2010 to 2011. The past year of 2014 has a recorded decline of 20 percent.

“We are living a time of peace we had not enjoyed in a long time,” said Alberto Capella, Secretary of Public Safety in Tijuana. Municipal authorities have doubled efforts to ensure a peaceful environment to the public. The Mexican government is aiming to boost tourism to try and stimulate the economy.

San Ysidro Port of Entry – which separates Tijuana, Mexico, from San Diego County, USA – is the busiest land border crossing in the world, with more than 30 million people crossing into the country of Mexico last year alone, according to government statistic.

Why are so many people crossing into Tijuana on a regular basis? Well the reasons vary. Tourists come to enjoy the beaches and the restaurants, others come to visit family members, shoppers come looking for good deals on certain items, many come to Mexico for Dental Care and Surgical procedures, and last but not least many thousands of foreigners actually live in Tijuana and work in the US, because the cost of living is so much cheaper.

During your visit to Tijuana, you will find that, in general the Mexican people are very hospitable, helpful and resourceful. However, keep in mind that Mexico is a developing country and perhaps, you will see many things there that you are not used to seeing, but for the people in Tijuana, this is their way of life and they are used to it. It is of interest to note that the locals here in Tijuana manage to find joy in their way of life.

Again I pose the question, Is Tijuana safe? From my personal experience visiting TJ four days a week for the past two years, I would have to say Yes, TJ is as safe as any other big city. That being said, like in any other large cities one must be cautious, by doing so you will thoroughly enjoy your visit south of the border.
