Coming From New Zealand to Have Bariatric Surgery in Tijuana, Mexico

“Reaching out to New Zealand and Australia”

At Go Light Bariatrics we are extremely proud of being able to assist patients coming to have a bariatric surgery with Dr.Francisco Zavalza from as far as New Zealand and Australia. Recently our patient from New Zealand Marise Bishop shared her personal experience in a local newspaper Hamilton News”, an issue from July 8, 2016, in New Zealand.

We thank Marise for telling her story of going through a difficult process of making a decision to travel overseas for her weight loss surgery. And we hope her experience will help many others to put those fears aside and get started with a new stage in their life, an exciting weight loss journey! Coming From New Zealand to Have Bariatric Surgery in Tijuana, Mexico.

Marise’s story of having her Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Tijuana, Mexico with Dr.Zavalza

Kia ora Koutou
Ko Waikato Tainui ahau, Ko Marise
Bishop taku ingoa.

Very recently I noticed that in the last eight months, I had put on a lot of weight. Dare I say it, I enjoyed the different types of food that I consumed but eventually, I thought ‘Gal, you cannot live like this for the rest of your life’.

Honestly, I was not motivated to return to the gym so I chose to go to Mexico and have bariatric surgery, a gastric sleeve. I did a lot of research before I made my final decisions, however.

This article is dedicated to everyone who has been considering weight loss surgery but hasn’t been able to afford it in New Zealand and is afraid of having it done in a foreign land at a cheaper price.

I contacted Go Light Bariatrics via www.golightbariatrics.com by filling out a contact request form and I was emailed the complete information packet, which explained the process. It included all the necessary information on how to get prepared for weight loss surgery, a price list, and information about the bariatric surgeon.

I let them know that I had been considering two other companies and that I had many other questions. My doubts included a fear of the company being based in Mexico or in the US, whether the bank account was real, whether the surgeon had enough experience, whether he had a high infection or death rate, whether they would provide on-site assistance in English and arrange hotel and transportation in Mexico and many more questions.

I finally became comfortable with the entire process. My final decision was made after I spoke on the phone and after I had a Skype consultation with the surgeon. Those live conversations helped to create a trustworthy relationship and made me feel safe.

It was the most humbling experience. Everyone was caring and it really felt like it was generated from sincerity. The driver at the airport was very efficient. The gentlemen at the Marriott Hotel displayed the provisions of customer service and the hospital staff went that extra mile with excellence.

Sadly not many people knew about Aotearoa. I did explain that we are closely related as indigenous people.

I truly felt confident about the entire process. If anyone is still in doubt about weight lost surgery, email me mbishop@terunanga.org.nz

A word from Go Light Bariatrics Tijuana, Mexico

Tijuana in Mexico is known to be one of the largest destinations for weight loss surgery in the world. Most of the patients come from the United States and Canada. We are proud of having had one patient from New Zealand. Marise Bishop is our dear patient that was brave enough not only to get on such a long journey, but to agree to have a surgery in Mexico—a foreign country that, unfortunately, is often thought of as being not safe and is often called a third-world country.

Marise‘s initial contact request was exciting news; I knew it was going to be a very interesting experience, as we are very well aware of how nervous patients feel about the surgery itself, not to mention about travelling to a foreign country. For many this becomes a first time experience in various aspects: first time flying, first time surgery, and first time travelling abroad. It can be overwhelming. A person coming all the way from New Zealand would have to put a lot of trust in our doctors‘ team, and we would have to do everything we can to make Marise feel safe, comfortable and well taken care of.

A comment from our patient from Australia Alison Burch, gastric sleeve, November 2015

I cannot speak highly enough of the staff and my surgeon Dr. Zavalza at Go Light Bariatrics. In November 2015 I underwent a vertical gastric sleeve operation. The whole experience was a big exciting adventure to get my life back. I did a lot of research to pick Go Light, and I knew I had made the right decision to leave Australia and go somewhere where they actually wanted to help me, rather than just charge me a lot of money. I sailed through the surgery and recovery, nothing was too much trouble for anyone, including the Marriott Hotel staff. I’ve lost approx. 30 kilos in 6 months, and I look and feel great. I live in Australia. Don’t listen to those people who tell you that you are nuts to go to a foreign country. Going to Go Light Bariatrics in Mexico was probably the best and most life changing decision I have made.
