MESSAGE FROM THE DOCTOR
“I decided to become a surgeon because I love surgery “, – says Dr. Francisco Zavalza about one of the most important decisions in his life. “Surgery gives more opportunities to resolve health issues permanently. Bariatric surgery in particular is a very effective tool to solve weight loss problems. And it is not simply an aesthetic issue: obesity is a leading cause of preventable diseases and death in North America. In recent years, the number of overweight people (with Body Mass Index of 30 and more) in developed countries has increased significantly. And for me, as a bariatric surgeon, helping people to get healthy, change their lives, see that happy sparkle in their eyes – is the greatest reward! “, – says Dr. Z (as his patients lovingly call him).
Dr. Zavalza states: “Weight loss surgery is a relatively new specialty, but recently it has become very popular. One could say we are seeing a boom of bariatric surgery these days. The reason why I decided to focus my career on weight loss surgery is due to its effectiveness. “
Dr. Francisco Zavalza specializes in all types of bariatric procedures, which has been a focus of his practice since 2010.
In 2006 Dr. Zavalza graduated with honors from one of the most highly ranked medical schools in Mexico – the University of Guadalajara, Jalisco. He received an extensive training in general surgery during his residency years in the General Hospital of Tijuana, Baja California. Having chosen bariatric surgery as his specialization, Dr. Zavalza received a Diploma in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery in 2010.
As of 2022, Dr. Francisco Zavalza has performed and assisted to more than 6,500 bariatric surgeries, and has given a chance to have a much healthier and satisfying life to many of his patients. For him it is not only a weight loss surgery, it is a long process of healing, changing life, eating habits and mental attitude. Dr. Zavalza`s patients can communicate with him directly before and after surgery for as long as needed.
During his career, Dr. Zavalza performed hundreds of other abdominal procedures such as cholecystectomy, hysterectomy, appendectomy, various types of hernia repairs, tubal ligation, and others, thus gaining a lot of experience in resolving gastrointestinal complications.
In 2020 Dr. Zavalza became a medical director at the CIBA Surgical Center and has been a professor of laparoscopic bariatric surgery regularly participating in the training programs for younger surgeons.
Earlier in 2022 Dr. Zavalza co-founded the 1st IFSO fellowship program for already established bariatric surgeons who are striving to improve in their medical field.
