The most amazing, easy, all inclusive, best priced experience for getting bariatric surgery in Mexico! I just had my surgery with Dr. Zavalza and the Go Light Bariatric team 2 weeks ago. I had been nervous to travel to Mexico but it was so easy. My insurance in the USA excludes bariatric surgery and it was $24k. I had heard of people going to MX and I joined Dr Z FB group and saw it was $4,300 and included everything but plane ride. No catch.

I decided on surgery just a month before I had it. I submitted a request for consult on the website and was emailed paperwork and times and picked one a few days away. Dr. Z called me on FB video chat and he went over my history, my goals, my meds, and asked if I had any questions. I was told I’d be a great candidate and Irene emailed me all the info I needed and I picked a date. They provided all the information. It was such a breath of fresh air. From what to expect, how to travel, what to pack, and tips and tricks for going to Mexico.

They allow you to bring a companion and so I brought my best friend. We flew out Tuesday and came home on Saturday. Their package includes everything for me and my companion except for her food. It included all my food at the hospital and hotel (it was even room service at the hotel), my rides to and from everywhere, an English speaking translator every step of the way, someone that always stayed with us, all our pre op tests, unlimited post op consults for 2 years, curbside pick up and drop off at the airport in San Diego-everything!!

I flew out Tuesday. I got a text from my driver to let him know when I landed and he was there waiting. He picked us up and took us straight across the border. We were taken to the Marriott hotel where the parking lot has someone guarding the only entrance and people at the front doors too so it was very safe. I never opened a car door of lifted my luggage the whole time. The bellhops would run to my car to help. I did bring lots of small American dollars to tip my drivers, bell hops, etc. We checked into the hotel and the 3 of us having surgery the next day left our our testing. First stop was a CT scan. It was quick and our driver stayed with us.

Next to CIBA hospital. It’s a little funny that it’s attached to a grocery store but it is nice because your companion can go get food. Your companion is also never left alone. Someone from Go Light will go with them and help them translate menus, and just so they aren’t alone. There is also a Walmart not too far away that you can ask for a ride to or take an Uber, or you can order Uber Eats to the hotel.

At the hospital we had our blood work and EKG and then given protein shakes and jello and a stuffed animal stomach. You head back to the hotel and can swim or rest. There is no Netflix at the hotel but there is WiFi. The next morning we checked out of our hotel and driven to the hospital. Got our room with 2 beds, got my IV started, and waited for my turn. There is Netflix at the hospital which was nice. Surgery was a breeze. A little pain when I woke up but not bad. Walking helps the gas. You swish ice in your mouth since you can’t drink and sleep a lot.The leak test is the next morning and then you can have juice and popsicles. I stayed 2 nights in the hospital. You use WhatsApp to ask for drinks and they stayed on top of my meds.

After 2 nights in the hospital we checked out and taken back to the hotel for one night. Our driver offered to take us shopping for gifts and go to the pharmacy to bring meds home and I felt good enough to walk and shop.Saturday morning we were driven across the border early in the medical lane and just needed my birth cert and license. It was painless. I asked for a wheelchair at the airport and was helped through security and only an hour before getting on the plane and we got on first.

I’m 11 days out today. I feel great. No issues with food or drink. My incisions look great.

I would absolutely do it again!
